On the shores of the Gulf of Genoa, in the province of La Spezia in the Liguria region, there are fishing villages called Cinque Terre, which means “five lands” in Italian. However, this territory became a tourist attraction only at the end of the 20th century, and immediately became the most popular resort for luxury trip.
Bearing the status of a national park in Italy, Cinque Terra includes five villages with vineyards and fishermen’s settlements – Vernazza, Monterosso al Mare, Corniglia, Riomaggiore and Manarola; a delightful coast washed by the azure waters of the Ligurian Sea and expressive mountain ranges, among which the Cinque Terra is located.

There are several ways to get to the Cinque Terre. The easiest way to get there is on your own yacht. In this case, you can contemplate the unique landscapes from the sea. Traveling by car in the Cinque Terre is unfortunately difficult, because there is so little space in the cities that no tourist car is allowed to drive there! Many tourists prefer to travel between towns by train. The train will run between cities, but you should forget about the views from its windows: tunnels pass most of the route.

It was about them that the local poet (Nobel Prize winner in 1975) Eugenio Montale wrote that when you see “yellow balls of lemons, the ice melts.”

What to see in the Cinque Terre

Fragments of ancient walls
The remnants of these troubled times are fragments of defensive walls and towers from which attacks could be repelled. If you get off at Riomaggiore and walk along a narrow street to a miniature port. Here all the streets lead up and down, forming picturesque labyrinths.

Romantic walk in the Cinque Terre
It’s time for a romantic walk. Via dell’Amore, or the Path of Love, follows a rock-cut path that connects Riomaggiore and Manarola. Along the way we pass hundreds of… castles, a favorite place of many lovers from all over the world and covered with inscriptions in all languages. Of course, in souvenir shops you can also buy a castle with the corresponding pattern of a couple, but it’s worth going here without it. What is important, the route is so short and easy that anyone can pass it.

Most tourists are met by the places of Monterosso and Vernazza, where a huge number of people scurry back and forth on secluded streets and hot beaches. Someone is resting in the sun, from time to time cooling off in the captivating sea waves.
Monterosso is the largest town in the Cinque Terre, distinguished by imposing cliffs and figurative statues carved right into the cliffs that line the coastline. In addition, the city produces world-famous alcoholic products – Schjakkera (sweet dessert wine) and Limoncello (lemon liqueur).
Cornelia is dominated by stunning cliffs that offer breathtaking panoramic views of the landscape from an imposing height. Vine groves stretch nearby, supplying local wine production. In the most attractive village of Cinque Terre, in the opinion of many, Manarole stands an amazing baroque church – San Lorenzo.
The shores of Riomaggiore are surrounded by chains of fishing boats lined up in a row. Here, as nowhere else, you can feel the spirit of an Italian village with bright houses piled up in one crowd, descending down the slope of the peak straight to the water surface. Even in a short period of time, it is possible to taste the very essence of Italian life and mentality.
